Londwynian Costume

While looking for something to wear to the Banquet, I came across a great site for Londwynian clothing.  It's alittle pricey, but they make excellent combination suggestions and the stuff is really nice looking.

As a steampunk artist and Western gunslinger I found that site before I came to KR, they have great suits and I love the sets.

For those of you who play cards in-game. There are some period looking playing cards in the Mens Accessories section.

Just be careful when playing with those cards, the paint cards (Ace,Jack,Queen,King) only face 1 direction and have no markings in the corners.

Also, the pip cards (2-10) have no markings in the corners so you need to count up the pips.

A good source for period pocket watches is your local gold and silver exchange, which for some reason (at least around here) have scores of them.  I also saw a very pricey 14K gold pen (fountain variety).  Alas, no hammers.

Seriously though, is this supposed to be what Londwynian costume is?  It says in the manner of Victorian England, and I guess that's what this crap is, but it seems totally out of place to me for the Knight Realms setting.  I was thinking exactly what she said, but well, I'm afraid if I post that I'll get banned from the forums for a month for bad mouthing James' favorite race.

Thats not what women worn in victorian england. That red dress is a style that found popularity in the southern united states from about 1895 till 1910ish.  The other stuff is much more simplified western wear popular in the early 1900's.  So in theory stuff that ugly shouldn't be at KR

I thought the ogre whore would look awesome in that red thing.  Don't crush Mike Smith's dream and the return of that most memorable and favorite NPC. 

That's also why Londwynians are a Restricted Race.  They should be A) Rare, and Played by people who can be trusted to play them tastefully, not garishly.

So on a serious note though... what exactly would be acceptable wear???  Since I no absolutely nothing about Victorian England... let alone the fashion at the time.

For men some of what is on that site is correct. Mens clothing really hasn't changed much sense the invention of pants.  Women are more complicated.  For women your wear a under corset, a hoop skirt and bummroll. With an over coat, 1 to 2 skirts and a bussle (think very similar to wedding dresses.) In england over all trend of this clothing is to make your bust and waste line small while making your hips and butt huge.  In american it was the same but with massive sleeve.

You want men's styles for Victorian England?  Check out any of the extant photos of the era, especially those of the royal family.  Want to be an explorer type,  See Livingston and/or Stanley.  Military - there are bajillions of photos showing dress and everyday uniforms.  As to normal folks' dress, look at any of the group photos from one of the great Chess tournaments from the late 19th early 20th century, say Hastings 1895 or St. Petersburg 1909 or 1914.  Like Jackie said, guys are easy.

As to women.  After breakfast I'll hit a few books.  One thing of which I am certain, the heavily corseted woman was a fixture of the drawing room and party.  Those who traveled did not so severely restrict themselves.  In other words, go lighter on the tightening.  Besides, with such beauty that is evidenced at KR, why gild the lily by trying to enhance it?

No, this is not the intended look for Londwyn, and you can expect we will be adding notes to the Londwyn description that better clarify their costuming intent.

This website is wonderful for props, but costuming wise, the only elements that actually fit within the Londwyn "look" is pants with suspenders, collarless shirts and some of the long coats.

Additionally, consider that the actual appearance of Londwyn should be closer to late renaissance/early colonialism, not early english industrial/late victorian.

Pictures would be helpful.

I started to Google "late rennaisance/early colonialism" and found that most of the images, art, and pictures of the society of then lends to a Tudor's/Henry VIII look.  Is this what James was looking for/imagining?

I will endeavor to find some good references for public perusal this week to give an idea of a range of Londwynian concepts. Consider that most references you will find casually on le intertubes is going to lean towards high society and fanciful clothing. The average man's clothing is going to be a good deal more focused towards the utilitarian.
