I attribute this to having way too much free time on my hands coupled with a desire to see you fall, Mr Schaller.

An update has been made to the description for Essences, as well as to the skill Collect Essence - both are now live in the Online Rulebook (and repeated here for simplicity):
What is Essence?
Essences are ethers occasionally found in living beings or base elements that are believed to be the raw substances of which all things are made.
Depending on the source and the type of the ether, there are a myriad of forms that it can take - making recognition of one by the untrained observer impossible. The process of collecting an essence produces an equal variety of forms, though all essences are quite small.
Selecting props to represent essences is mostly left to the player's imagination, as long as the props are not things that would seem otherwise valuable to a character (e.g., a gemstone) and as long as they are very small in size. For example, you might represent an essence from a slain monster with a small vial of colored water, or an essence from a great boulder with a smooth, monochrome marble.
Collect Essence
This skill allows a character to recognize and identify essences in items, dead beings, or areas, and to collect essences from these sources. To use this skill on a dead being, you must call the skill to the player of the being to determine if an essence is present; to use this skill on an area or item, you must spot an essence card in its place. You must role-play collecting the essence for at least ten seconds, after which will be given or may take the essence card.
