Alcohol at the Awards Banquet

First off, I just want to thank everyone for their patience while the policy for alcohol at the Awards Banquet was finalized.  It involved a lot of work, by a lot of people and that caused the delay.  Again, my thanks for waiting patiently while this was worked out.  Without further ado, the long awaited policy for alcohol at the Awards Banquet!

Zero Tolerance

There will be a "Zero Tolerance" policy in effect for the banquet.  If at any time a person is found to be in violation of this policy, they will be dealt with as prescribed in the section labeled "Disciplinary Action".  There will be no favoritism, nor will there be any bending of the rules.  The policy is the policy, and anyone who is in violation of it will be dealt with swiftly.

Type of Alcohol allowed at the Awards Banquet

There will be only beer, wine, and malt beverages (Smirnoff Ice, Mike's Hard Lemonade etc.) allowed at the Awards Banquet.  No hard liquor is allowed. 

Quantity of Alcohol allowed at the Awards Banquet

Each person who wishes to drink at the Awards Banquet may bring either 1 six pack of beer/malt beverages or 1 bottle of wine with them.  You may not bring both a six pack of beer and a bottle of wine, it is one or the other.  Do not bring more then that, because I will tell you to return it to your car.

Procedure for bringing Alcohol to the Awards Banquet

If you wish to bring/drink alcohol to the Awards Banquet, you must follow this procedure upon your arrival:

1. I will be set up inside of the area that is normally the "Bar" area inside of the inn.  You must come to the table I am at with the alcohol you brought with you.

2. I will check your picture identification to ensure that you are of legal age to drink.  Upon doing that I will give you a wristband to wear for the remainder of the evening.  Do not remove that wristband or give it to anyone else.

3. I will then take labels and label the alcohol you brought with you with your name on them and my signature on them.  Do not remove those labels.

Disciplinary Action

If someone is noted to be visibly intoxicated, they are cut off from all alcohol for the rest of the night.  They are not to be permitted to drive home in the instance that they are visibly intoxicated.  Anyone seen to be visibly intoxicated is suspended from KR for 1 month.

If someone is noted to be visibly intoxicated and is a disturbance for the banquet, they are immediately removed from the banquet and placed into a room to sober up.  They are not to be permitted to drive home in the instance that they are visibly intoxicated.  Anyone seen to be visibly intoxicated and a disturbance to the banquet is suspended from KR for 3 months.

If someone serves alcohol to a minor (knowingly or unknowingly) they will be immediately escorted from the banquet and asked to leave.  That person will be suspended from KR for 6 months.  In the event that alcohol is served to a minor, the local authorities will also be contacted.

If a minor consumes alcohol they will be asked to remain in a side room for the remainder of the banquet.  They are not to be permitted to drive home that evening.  That person will be suspended from KR for 6 months. 

Spirit of the Policy

If at any point I feel that a person is violating the spirit of the alcohol policy, they will be dealt with based upon the severity of their actions.

Final Comments

I understand that this policy seems harsh, however everyone must bear in mind that this is a private function hosted on the property owned by James.  There are no professional bartenders who are trained to cut people off when they get too intoxicated at this function.  The policy on alcohol must reflect that fact and we must be prepared for that.

Can we see a menu so that I can get a wine that pairs with the meat and/or regional cuisine? I dont wish to show the fool I am by bringing a white when I should have a red.

I feel all this talk about alcohol at the awards banquet is cheapening the evening.

I'm going to go ahead and answer some of the questions that I've received privately so that everyone can know the answers to these questions.

Question: "I weigh more then other people, can I bring more alcohol to the Awards Banquet"

Answer: No.  I'm not going to have a gym scale at the Awards Banquet and have a weigh in to see if you classify as a "Heavy Weight Drinker".  The quantity of alcohol allowed is no matter what size or gender you are.

Question: "Can two people split a six pack if they don't plan on drinking that much"

Answer: That is absolutely fine, just make me aware of what two names I am putting on the labels when you come to check in at the table.

Question: "Can I go drink in the parking lot?"

Answer: First off, I really hope this was a joke question.  Second off, no.  This falls under the "Spirit of the Policy" part of the alcohol policy.  Now, I don't plan on making random trips out to the parking lot to check if people are drinking.  However, if I am made aware of a situation where I have to walk out to the parking lot to curb some people drinking at their cars, rest assured I will not be happy and the disciplinary action will reflect that.

Question: "Can I see a menu so that I can get a wine that pairs well with the meal"

Answer: Unfortunately I don't have access to that answer for you.  If you want, bring both a red and a white with you and once you see what the menu is you can just leave one of the two bottles in your car.  I understand that's not an ideal answer but it's the best answer I have.

mix/matched six packs IE a six pack with one dessert beer (a chocolate stout or such) one before dinner beer, one after dinner beer, etc. Would that be ok or should it be a sealed six pack just to be safe?

I have but one word for those of you planning on bringing wine - corkscrew.

Questions round two:

Question: "Can I bring a mix-matched six pack of beer, or must it be sealed"

Answer: It can be a mix-matched six pack of beer, it doesn't have to be sealed.  Again, I'm not so much worried about the ABV of the beer as much as the quantity of beer.

Question: "If two people bring a bottle of wine/a six pack is it OK to share provided that they are both of legal drinking age"

Answer: Yes that's fine, just try to keep the amount of alcohol consumed approximately equal for each person in question. 

Also, good call Charlie, if you're drinking wine, bring a corkscrew!  It would be terrible if you brought a bottle of wine and DIDN'T have a corkscrew.
