It would probably be ok. All in all allot of the combat safety is determined by the player themselves and how they use the weapons. As long as you receive no complaints in combat about it, then it could probably work out.

just from looks, I would probably let someone moc accidently hit me with it covered in foam to test its safety... so that's a good sign

If you covered that in foam, I'd be ok with getting hit by that. Can't hurt as much as a cored graphite or rattan weapon.

Please just keep in mind that these guys are referring to accidentally getting hit. In no way are you allowed to strike with the hilt of a weapon, regardless of what it's made from.
