Can anyone recommend a nice hiking/walking trail near NYC or easily accessible via Metro-North/NJ Transit? The trail hike is set for October to catch either the leaves changing color, or just to enjoy the cooler weather of Autumn.

Someone asked this on Metafilter a while back, and I bookmarked it for myself - here's the link:

Kenlockwood Gorge is a decent trail to hike, it's not really long, (12ish miles?), but it does have some nice views and features. It's within easy walking distance of the Highbridge, NJ, train station, starts around there, and then goes through Annandale, and Califon. It also has the added benefit of being within spitting distance of my house.

I would like to emphasize the PORTION part of what Chris said.
Hiking the whole thing is torturous and only a sadistic man would make Boy Scouts do it.
True story.

An especially sick man would make his scouts hike until the tall kid puked. True story.

Wow... ok. I wasn't really plan on making kids puke, but now it does sound tempting. Still, thanks for the suggestion and i am looking into a number of trails right now.
