question for the KR community was created by Secarius (Secarius)
this question is for the entire KR community. dont ask for more details they wont be given

If you had an opportunity to live rent free
and get paid to do a job that you would relatively enjoy (its not your dream job)
and you would keep said job for the next 40 years

BUT

you had to move to San Francisco

would you stay where you are now?.. or move to Cali?

Yeah, I'd absolutely take it. 100%.

...though I suppose it depends how dedicated you are to the idea of your DREAM job. Thats a personal question only you can decide.

Edit: I like to think that when it comes to working, people fall into two basic groups: those who work to live, and those who live/love to work.

If you're the latter (I am)... well, I probably wouldn't take it.

If you're the former, take it and run.

*Disclaimer: the writer of this message is currently pursuing her dream job, which if achieved will likely end with HER in San Francisco or a similar California locale. Also, she hates New Jersey and would do anything to get out*

Alex-

I currently live about 2 hours south of SF in Monterey, CA.  If you want to talk living in Northern CA, send me a note via the boards and I will give you my email/phone.

Generally this part of NorCal is great.  A great deal of hiking, water sports (but not beach bum stuff - it's way too cold), environmental awareness, incredible wine, a strong art community, historical sites, and a lot of ethnic diversity.  That said, it is not sunny SoCal, so most water activities involve a wet suit.  You don't have a robust interstate/state hwy system so travel can be a bit more tedious than most NJ-NYers are used too.  All this said, I can't wait to move back East.

There is no choice at all.
Never choose to be an indentured servent for 40 years.
Live free.

Work so that you might live your life.
Don't live your life so that you might move.

Also the cost of living in that area is outrageous.

There would be my determining factor. How much does it pay?

Also, would you be an indentured servant? If you didn't like it, could you leave?

These are important questions you need to ask yourself.

It's an Adventure! Seriously, If you are capable of leaving at anytime, try it out for a bit, and if ya don't like it, come home.  If the pays that good, a plane ticket wouldn't be that much hassle and this way you get to see a different part of the country up close as an inhabitant.

This.  A friend of mine here gets free rent working as an RA (residential assistant) at the local dorm rooms here in London.  He get's worked like a slave, they don't even like when the RA leave the dorms at all.  If they had their way, he couldn't leave the building.

Though San Francisco would be nice.

Go. Try it. Don't like it? Then leave and go someplace else or come back. Better to regret doing it than not doing it.

Having a dream job is great and everyone should have it at some time in their career.  That said, you are young enough to relocate and outgoing enough you will have no problem meeting people.  Also, you can become a legal marijuana farmer with a license and all.  Just saying...

I honestly say go and explore. Plus with the option of if you don't like it you can leave it, at least you can say you did it. I'm not sure if you get many opportunities to do this kinda stuff so.. yeah..

OK. I moved away from everything I knew 5 years ago. I miss my friends, my family and my Larp. However, if I could go back and make the same choice, I would. The world is a big place, and there's a lot of it to see. You are the only person who can make the choice, but remember to ask yourself what you would regret more: Doing it, and coming back if it didn't work out, or never going and wondering what might have happened if you did?

it also depends on what kind of life you prefer.  You're currently close to or in NYC.  San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. awesome victorian houses, tons of theatre, the best chinatown EVER.

that being said, your headspace is completely understandable.  I had the very serious option of going to college there.  for not very much money. I opted to stay here because I love this state, and the best place for me to figure things out was home, not my parents house, but in my home.

so good luck. I hope all of this helps!
