All Hallow's Eve question was created by Rudolf (Rudolf)
As this is an OOG question, I don't know where else to ask it.

For the holiday of All Hallow's Eve, it states that in Khitan, pumpkins are carved to ward off evil spirits and ghosts and ghouls.

Are bears likely to want to show up and eat the pumpkins if we carve some and put them around the Stump for decoration?  I have no idea if bears consider pumpkins tasty treats, so I figured I'd ask here for better information.

Thanks in advance.

My first inclination would be a yes, they will nom pumpkins, but I speak only from limited experience. A wildlife volunteer and avid hiker, I'd propose using plastic pumpkins (which are much less satisfying than real ones) or getting creative and using paper cut outs and sculpture to create that flickering Halloween feel.

Craft stores like Joanns have the styrofoam ones you can carve into that look pretty realistic and you can keep them for next year.

I second what Kelly said.  I work at Michaels, the arts & crafts chain, and we've got a ton of them.  They're not hard to carve yourself and won't attract bears or insects.

We've kept pumpkins up before around the inn though, haven't we?

Precisely what I was going to say... are we concerned that the stump is a bit more secluded?

I'd suggest getting in touch with the Ranger and seeing what he thinks~ he'd be the expert here and probably could shed some light for us. It would be great if we could have real jack-o-lanters ;)

Past Octobers were at Hickory Run - This is the first October at Camp Sac.  I'll bring this up w/ Staff for an official answer.

About pumpkins as it turns out bears love eating pumpkins, so to keep everyone from being eaten by bears the pumpkins can be kept outside while people are around and then brought inside a building (not a tent, also bring them in at night), or they can be kept  outside around the inn for the whole weekend and can be tossed out on sunday.

Thanks!

Are we allowed to use real flame inside the pumpkins, or are glowsticks still preferred?

How about we just avoid using real pumpkins considering that wherever they are they WILL attract bears. Even to the dumpster, like it needs any more of a lure as it is since it seems the bear enjoys doing a jog on it as well.

The bear does a jog on the dumpster?

From our lighting policy;
"Candles, lanterns, or torches that produce real firelight are permitted for IG use, but are not permitted for use inside of buildings or on porches; an item card is required for anything larger than a candle."

Any open flame must be supervised, even if inside a gourd.  If you want your pumpkin on your porch or anywhere near your building or want to leave it on when you're not there, get a glowstick or an LED candle.  Alternatively, you can always illuminate your pumpkin with the light of James' brilliant smile.

Jackie already posted our policy on what is acceptable for this coming event, that may change for future events.  It is certainly suggested that you get some of those fake pumpkins, but if you bring real ones follow the guidelines she posted.

Haha, a jig. Autocorrect is not always my friend. The bear keeps breaking the dumpster, basically.

Might just be safer to get the realistic fake pumpkins from a place like Michaels.
