The skill Evaluate Item is still needed to know this chart, correct?

Yes. No matter how you may think it logical that you could just memorize the chart easily, if you do not have the skill "Evaluate Item" you cannot tell the value of a gem. Despite the fact that it is the same color and shape as the last gem you sold for 5 gold, from an in-game perspective the gems would have varying degrees of flaws and details that would change the value.

As far as the low-value gems go... the plastic ones are the "uncut" gems, and the glass-marble-like ones are the "smooth" gems?

The numbers before are just a list, not a "quantity required for the listed value", correct?

Here's a chart that might be a bit easier to read:

[hr]

Amethyst - 0
Emerald - 1
Ruby - 2
Sapphire - 3
Citrine - 4

You will note these are alphabetical, with the exception of Citrine.

Gems are ranked according to shape:

Square +1
Oval / Teardrop +2
Round +3

So a square Amethyst (A1) is 1 gold, where a Round Sapphire (S3) is 3 + 3, or 6 Gold.  Gems should have an engraving on them (letter / number) that will help decode them.

For uncut gems:

For Brilliant Cut Gems (Very Rare):

Please remind people who do NOT have the Eval. Item skill that they should not be able to ID items, if you see them doing it.
