It has been two days since the two warehouses were burned down in Valdalis. The literal and proverbial smoke has cleared and a few facts have started to come out. Nobody, in fact, died in the warehouses but quite a bit of durable goods were lost, mostly surplus furniture, lumber from Kaladonia destined for building projects and a supply of wagon wheels and canvas. The monetary loss is dramatic but at least nobody will be starving to death because of this. And all of that dry wood helps explain why the warehouses burned so easily and completely.
The merchants and the residents of Valdalis are all on edge though. Prices for goods become somewhat erratic in the following days with some merchants dropping prices dramatically so they can make their coin and leave before more trouble occurs and others raising prices to try to cover losses while taking advantage of the suddenly lowered supply status of certain goods. The Baronial Guard makes a big show of recruitment with guardsmen visible on every corner and are riding from the rift gate to Valdalis with every caravan. One night a small mob or farmers and disgruntled merchants marches to the market place and stages a protest of the response but after a few words from a baronial official the crowd disperses. Nobody is quite sure which baronial official it was though. Some say it was Sir Slack McDermitt others say it was Lieutenant Oren Tenderson but nobody is quite sure.
