I have been desperately trying to make some boffer weapons (my first, ever) in time for this upcoming event and I have been to three different Home Depots, a Lowes, and four different small hardware stores in search of proper pipe insulation for the production of boffer weapons.
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a reasonable amount in the North Jersey/New York State Border area? I live at the top of Bergen County, about two minutes from the New York State Border. Twenty minutes north of Hackensack.

It tends to vary from store to store - last I checked the Home Depot in the Palisades Mall had some, but that was last year some time.

I went there, and they only had 3/8" - All of the Home Depots and Lowes only had 3/8" in stock.

I know that there's a home depot in Passaic,
A lowes near East Rutherford
and you may have some luck if you
go into Walmart near garfield,
hope that helps out.

After having been to all of the regular suppliers, I think that I will need to search for a plumbing specialty store in the area. Does anyone know of any that they suggest?

The reason you are having difficulty is that NY and NJ building codes only require 3/8" foam.
However, you should be able to find it at Able Paint and Hardware in Clifton NJ

if you cant get any by the upcoming event, i have a bag of the 5/8" foam im not currently using, and an ace by me carries it on occasion. i can bring it up, and if theres time we can put the weapon together on site.

Thank you for the tip Josh, and thank you for the offer to help Tom. I am going to give Able Paint & Hardware Co. a call, and see if they have it in stock.
If they do, I will pick it up tomorrow between classes.... if that lead is a dead end, I will keep looking. If all else fails though, the help would be much appreciated - I am going to give it my best try to acquire some first though.

Quite honestly, your best bet is to suck up the shipping cost and just order it online. I know I've scoured stores looking for it and came up with very little luck. The amount you pay in gas is not worth finding that one niche shop.
hardware.hardwareandtools.com/tools/Fros...%20Pipe%20Insulation
This is where I would order from.

This is a fact I learned too well. I even had a hardware store special order it and it still cost me more than if I did it myself.

Quick question regarding the sizing, am I comparing the PVC pipe to Iron or Copper pipes?
I have both 1/2" and 3/4" PVC pipe, and I don't know if I am buying to spec for iron or copper pipe.

copper. Don't be shy to tell the folks at able exactly what this is for. They know what we do and they stock the 5/8" stuff for us. They also have a good selection of duct tape down the last aisle. Enjoy

Pipe sizes are universal, with no difference based on material. For some reason I have no desire to research, 1/2" pipe is .840 in diameter. IIRC, and it has been 18 years since I worked with this information, all 5/8 pipes are .940, while 3/4 comes in at 1.05.
