New Player Hello. was created by Templar Aldric (Selrik)
Hello all, yet another new player here.

I have been larping in various systems since '94 and I am fortunate to be moving back to NY this month, to a location about 1 hour from Sparta, NJ. I have attended Knight Realms several years ago, with a group from Virginia, and I am looking forward to attending an event again as soon as I get settled there.

So, I am looking forward to meeting you all.

Thanks for all the welcomes.

I think I may wait until a better photo comes up, that costume is from over 11 years ago. :S

I am not going to play the same thing I did back then, so on second thought, nevermind. :)

Doing some background research, I was perusing the maps of Kormyre. I am a little confused by the descriptions of the Great Rift.

I get that the Great Rift separates the continent, but what is the Great Rift? Is it a canyon or some magical manifestation, or both?

Next question, I also have read that explorers found a way through a network of caverns to the other side of the rift... Can't you just sail across the Quail Straights? There is even a port city on the other side now...

So, does that mean the caverns are not used in favor of the quicker and probably safer ship route now?

I intend to make a Kormyrean PC, hopefully for the October event, in a nutshell, how would he have come to Travance?

I think the Rift is just a giant version of the Grand Canyon. As a Komyrian, you have a multitude of options, just be creative. As a Selandrian, I had to caravan jump till I reached Angst, where I hitched a ship to Travance. But for you, it's easier, so come up with something fun.

Hello, and welcome back!

my name's Justin, and I'm a New Player Marshal. If there's anything you need, let me know.

While I can't go into great detail about the rift (partially because I don't know much about it myself) how you choose to arrive in Travance is up to you. My character, being from Coast Haven, obviously took a ship. It's up to you how you want to cross, but know that it does take time. I believe the direct route takes about a week, whereas the ships actually take longer. I would say around 2-3 weeks from port to port.

Ok, noted for both replies...

Some more questions if you don't mind:

One of the profession options that I am considering is Cleric. I can't seem to find the skill Cleric's Weapon described. Where can I find that skill description?

Further, at the moment I have only Sword phys reps. If a Cleric's deity has a Mace as its Holy Weapon, would that make it awkward to use a Sword, or in what way would that limit my character?

Here you are mate:

Cleric's Weapon

The Cleric may purchase a single, specific weapon skill that falls within the tenets of their Deity's choice for a weapon (i.e. – 1 Handed Edge, Bastard Blunt, 2 Handed Blunt, etc.). This skill may be purchased multiple times for different sizes of weapons, or different weapons if allowed. Please see the "Deities of Arawyn" section for the appropriate Holy Weapon(s) for each deity.

Also this:

  • Agaura’s holy weapons are a mace of any size and a one-handed sword.
  • Andorra’s holy weapon is a staff.
  • Brazen’s holy weapon is a hammer, of any size.
  • Chronicler’s holy weapon is a staff.
  • Enax’s holy weapon is a one-handed sword.
  • Gaia’s holy weapon is a staff.
  • Galladel’s holy weapon is a one-handed mace.
  • Galmachis’ holy weapon is a mace of any size.
  • Glomm’s holy weapon is a one-handed axe.
  • Malyc’s holy weapon is a morning star of any size.
  • Valos’ holy weapon is a mace of any size.

You've probably already found it, but there's a bunch of stuff about each of the different gods scattered around the website (the rulebook is perhaps good place to start if not - flick to "The Deities")

Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks for that!

So that means that since there are no weapon proficiencies listed on the Cleric List, besides Cleric's Weapon, that if I want to use a sword, I must instead choose the Commoner's List to pick up 1 handed edge?

Later when I finally purchase or make a Mace, I can purchase Cleric's Weapon to gain proficiency with it?

But, in the Cleric List, it is possible to take a +1 Proficiency with the prereq being any weapon skill, so I have a choice which to apply it to?

Thanks, I was confusing 'proficiency' with 'skill' there.

In other words I can buy the skill 1HE from the Commoner's list, and progress with 1HE proficiency, when able, through the Cleric's list. If I obtain a Mace, I can buy the skill "Cleric's Weapon" (after training from an IG teacher) and I can choose to progress through the proficiencies as normal through the Cleric's list.

That actually makes a compelling argument to start off as a commoner, with the extra build, and then choose my profession IG, after rp with the other PCs.

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for all the responses!

You are correct HOWEVER. If you get any weapon proficiencies with a 1HE and then get a 1HB your current proficiencies will NOT carry over to your 1HB.
Example
You have 1HE and a wep prof +1RH. You swing for 3's in your right hand and 2 in your left.
You the purchase 1HB. You still swing 3's in your RH when using a 1HE HOWEVER you swing 2's with the 1HB regardless which hand since the wep prof is weapon AND hand specific.

Looking at costuming requirements for Cleric, and a Holy Symbol seems reasonably necessary.

Where would I find acceptable pendants or styles for, say, Valos?

Sun symbols are easy to find and many people make a craft store or etsy their store for such things. Sometimes merchants will also have applicable items at market faire. You could also ask in off-topic if anyone has an older one/one they don't use. :) welcome!

On holy symbols, can they vary?

I mean, I have picked up a cool looking brass pendant, in a abstract style that I think would be perfect for the "orb of light" that the symbol is described as.

Is there an accepted version?

Most Valosian holy symbols look something like this: img1.etsystatic.com/011/0/7663806/il_170x135.466508437_32pd.jpg

That does not preclude other designs, but I think straying too far from that would mean most people wouldn't recognize it as such right away. If you want a rules marshal/RP marshal answer, I suggest you ask in realizing the character/rules, this is just someone who has a lot of friends that play clergy members, and Valosians.

Hope it helps!

You shouldn't have a problem, as long as it's clearly recognizable as a sun. For example, there are many different variations on Real-life Holy symbols due to stylization and different locales. However, Rachel is right, if you are really worried, you can post a picture of what you're looking at on the Realizing the Character/Rules boards, and someone will give you a definitive ruling.
