So I've been up since 11am Central on Monday and we've been having a live chat on LSWTF.com since just after midnight. I welcome everyone, even Father White, to come join in the revelry...

There is, however, plenty to celebrate.  NPR has been covering the thing all day.  Its 20F here and I am definitely a fair weather sort of guy.  Kudos to those who brave the elements to catch their glimpse of history.  The long odds guys lost, fortunately.

While I agree that it's politics to kick the outgoing president in the ass, I don't think it's politics to celebrate our 44th President taking office. Whether you voted for Obama or not, today we preserved our union for four more years by peacefully handing the reigns of government to a new, freely elected, President.

Personally, I think Aretha Franklin's hat probably needs its own day of celebration. I'm endlessly fascinated by it. I thought George H. W. Bush did his level best to match her fabulousness, though, with that crazy fur hat of his. My only sincere, truest hope is that the fur was something ridiculous, like lemur, or hedgehog; then my day will be complete.

George W. Bush explained he would be writting a book on his presidency and hoped to "git er' dun", as soon as possible.

I am not trying to make a joke.  He said exactly that.

I liked the violin and cello song before the swear-in, it was very moving. And yes, Aretha Franklins' hat was ludicrous. The only thing I could think when I saw her stand up to the podium was my, that's some hat she's got there. And just look at those shiny thingies along the edge. Now how about that.

On January 20th, 1986 was the first time that the Federal Government observed Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, nearly 18 years after his assassination, 23 years later we find ourselves at a milestone in our nation's slow path to recovery from racism and social injustice.

However, expressing pleasure or displeasure of the current, or recently past (within 50 years), or future presidents should be avoided in these forums.  Brian Moore's alleged parties are dark grey at best.  Ike still has a few years of amnesty, however Aretha's hat is fair game.
