Independance day for the Republic of Cuba was created by Damien (Damien)
For those that care, the Republic of Cuba gained formal independence from Spain on this day, May 20, 1902, and went on to ratify a new Cuban Constitution.
The current Cuban regime does not celebrate May 20th, but we don't celebrate the current regime, so I guess we're even. Here's to hopefully one day celebrating it again.

I believe they gained their independence through our military intervention. We hit Spain, a third rate power with second rate ambitions, on two fronts when they did not have enough to fight on one (good strategy). Who can forget the first "Thrilla in Manila?"
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Batisto Regime overthrown by Castro and Che made Tamminy Hall and Boss Tweed look like angels in comparison. I believe it was called a popular uprising for a reason. Sadly, only the socialist powers supported it.
Eventually Cuba will have a more representative form of government. They might have a brand new day to celebrate. Confederate States of America bonds are worthless, except to collectors, Formosan and Taiwan residents claims on The Republic of China are worthless, as are the claims of those who fled Fidel.
If this is too political, Geoff, sorry and delete it.

Jose Marti would be rolling in his grave somewhere if he knew he was on Castro's Currency

Andrew Jackson on ours is pretty much an insult to everyone who held the Presidency and is an even bigger joke as he triggered a depression due to his elimination of the federal bank, not to mention his rather cavalier treatment of Supreme Court decisions with which he disagreed. I do admire his willingness to stand up for his personal convictions vis-a-vis his personal life, but he still ranks in my worst five presidents.

Interesting analogy Charlie though I think Jackson and Marti are almost opposite. Where you find that Jackson's presence on currency is an insult to the Presidency. Marti's presence on the currency is an insult to one of the greatest poets in any language, Jose Marti. (yes I count him up there with Shakepeare, Allegeri (sp?), Whitman and my favorite Poe)

In addition to insulting, Jackson's inclusion is ironic as he opposed the very system that honored him by including his likeness on a Federal Banknote.

Charlie shows textbook narcissism. I joke... and wow. I didn't expect to see a topic to celebrate Cuban independence day. This made my day.

All kinds I was there when they laid out a huge set of terrain for the Russian Prussian wars. They have all those tiny tanks for WWI They play all kinds of eras with horses and mechanized. It actually battles on modled 'real' terrain and what if scenarios. I can ask John for their name and a contact if you are interested.
Damien still waiting to hear back from you.

Those little tanks (either 6mm, of which I have around 800 from WWII, or 15 mm of which I only have around 100) are pr bably WWII, but I know that era is WAY to current for you. Find out if they play Flames of War or something [strike]real[/strike] less gamey, like Kampf Gruppe Commander or Clash of Armor. I will play or run something for them.
I also have lots of Russo-Japanese War, WWI, and WWII Naval miniatures as well as Napoleonic. My club has bajillions of Napoleonic land units and we have every regiement at a 1:33 ration that fought in the AWI.
Have lead, will travel.
