The "purchase" link from IMDB takes you to Amazon, where it's not listed as being available yet - you can only sign up for a notice when it does become available (in DVD or Blu-Ray).

Why does it always feel like filmmakers want to show larping in either a childish or extremely negative light. Seriously though.
I hate when people ask what KR is and then they say "Like in Role Models?"
I did find that part funny but KR is nothing like that! Nor is most larping

Honestly, I think it's the same problem that films about tabletop games have: What sort of interesting stories can you tell about it? I would imagine larping is easier as a bunch of people sitting around a table and rolling dice does not make a good movie, but still it's a matter of coming up with good stories.
I think it just so happens that Larping lends itself easily to horror and comedy. The question is, what kind of stories would you tell (or like to see) in a film about larping?

This kind of activity is far too niche to just be a footnote in a movie: it would have to be a main plot point. The only type of non-horror/comedy story I could think of that would possibly have any reason to involve a LARP would be something where, say, the LARP is a positive influence on someones life and brings him together with friends and family... which, ultimately, Role Models portrayed.
I have no problem with LARPing being shown like this... I mean, c'mon, look at it realistically. We dress up like pirates and elves and run around the woods swinging foam bats at our friends, screaming "2 damage! 2 damage!". No matter how serious you take the game, no matter how much you enjoy it... you have to admit its a little silly . As far as I'm concerned, that's just part of the fun.
If you take yourself TOO seriously and don't acknowledge that silliness... well, thats EXACTLY whats happening to the players in Role Models. Which, btw, I just got to see last Thursday, and in some ways was far, far, FAR more like KR than some people probably feel comfortable admitting to themselves... and for exactly what I just said about taking yourself too seriously .

Larping tends to focus more on horror or comedy because:
1.) Yes, it can be silly. But than that's why it's fun. I don't ever want to stop finding my hobbies amusing.
2.) It works well for horror because well..your in the middle of the woods. Isolated from the outside world with no one else around except some people that you know..or sort of know.
Actually this thread is giving me an idea now.

I'd be interested to see a Slasher movie, where a player goes off the deep end, as long as I have chain mail and my hatchet I'm good

OK, you need to watch "Mazes and Monsters" with Tom Hanks. Shows the evil toll D&D can take on your children.
I saw that movie... the problem was with the character Tom Hanks played. The character Hanks played had mental problems and did drugs. His name was James Dallas Egbert . I both love and hate this movie. The guy caused such an uproar over D&D when all his issues were based outside the game. To this day, people use this movie to cite as proof that D&D is evil.

Me and Matt B. ran a Sunday mod once involving two giant lizards and their hordes of goblin worshipers who descended upon the town after their egg was destroyed.

I wish I was there for that. you need amusing crap like that in a LARP. Too serious is no fun.

If it makes sense in the game world (giant lizards, crazy cartoonish goblin shaman) and doesn't completely pull me out of the game than it works.

But really. Think about putting the idea of Larp into a film. You either set the film about some kids larping and have a low budget LOTR, or you look at it for what it is. Hell we have all had those moments where we stand there, sleepy, smelly and dressed like an elf in the middle of December thinking 'what the hell am I doing?' while beating the snot out of your Ex with plumbing supplies.
Larp is one of those things that you either get or you don’t...like stamp collecting or train spotting... if you don't get it, the movie would be boring and so you sensationalise for a better received script, movie and broader interest. People understand 'Comedy' they also get 'Horror', but not everyone gets 'I spend thousands on fake swords and cake make-up'
