So,
Earlier this evening my throat got irritated. All I could think was "here we go". I know for sure I am getting sick. Is there anyway to prevent, or lessen the symptoms as they come on? I'm trying every remedy I know (gargling salt water, using Vicks on neck, feet and armpits. And plan to start drinking OJ like a fiend tomorrow). Any other advice?

Green tea with some honey and a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar(if you can stand it?). Lots of water and don't forget to eat. Don't eat anything cold if you can help it.
Etc etc. Good luck, lady.

A number one is rest. Try to get plenty of it and avoid exerting yourself until you get better.

Red Bull, Vodka, cigarettes, & hard partying. Seriously... 1 way doctors beat disease & sickness is use something that kills & is harmful to host & infection. Think of it like chemotherapy & canceer. Chemo will make the patient sick, weak, & generally kick his/her ass, but it will also get at the cancer. So go out, party, smoke, drink, get no sleep, & generally do bad things to yourself. You'll have fun, feel like crap, & teach that infection that your body is not worth making sick.

Once you are symtomatic it is too late to prevent illness. All you can do is alleviate the symptoms. The following help:
Drink more liquids than normal to stay hydrated.
Eat easily digestible food, in smaller, if more frequent servings.
Note: Chicken soup is a twofer
Jello, with some simple fruit in it is good.
Basic carbohydrates may be obtained by toast/breads/rools with butter, jam or honey.
Get as much rest as you can. Not necessarily sleep, but rest.
Hot baths ease aches, but remember hydration.
Any of the serious suggestions from previous posts are fine if you like the taste.

Oh, my advice applies to viral infections. Those caused by bacteria may be treeated with pharmaceauticals.

Lots and lots of honey, I found that a small stick of honey helped me calm my coughing and sore throat when I was at my last con. I'm not sure what kind of irritation you have, so it might jsut a worth a try thing.

this an old singer's trick to alleviate a sore throat. in a shot glass mix equal parts honey, and apple cider vinegar. gargle vigorously, and either spit or swallow, depending on preference. if you can down it though, do it. it will help more.

Apple cider vinegar (particularly Bragg Brand) is miracle product. Put a small amount in a cup with about 1/4c of water and just shoot it, and you don't really have to worry about the taste too much.
Rest! If I feel like I'm getting sick I generally sleep for about 15 hours, and sickness doesn't have an effin' chance.
