I only play 2E PnP, so the fact that it is a newer edition is something I had to get over years ago, or I would be losing out on a lot.

I liked the video, but honestly I can't stand 4th ed either.

I tried getting in on 2nd ed before 3rd ed came out, and enjoyed it... I played through 3.0 and 3.5 and enjoyed it... I got to 4th ed, and started hating it.

the funny thing is, some of my friends say that i don't like it becuase 'you cant power play'... but if a ranger build can have 12 attacks by level 6... I think they have their wires crossed.

I think the saddest thing about this video is seeing somr of the swords they were using, then looking above mytv and seeing yhe same Kit Rae swords...

Not to be a fourth edition flame war starter, but ranger is linear to play; you can't customize it, it doesn't have a second role to be played, and all it does is tons of damage. Most of it's attacks are also immediate actions; generally if it's "power played", you only twin strike every turn. Other classes do less damage, because they have other traits like healing, buffing, moving enemies around the table, being unkillable. Fourth edition is far more balanced, and someone being bad at the game still makes them able to perform the bare minimum required to function in a party. (Beer and pretzels RPG).

In third edition, the wizard/sorceror is more valuable than every other class in the party combined. You can give other classes double magic items, and candy to try to make them stand up to the class; but just having the class still is better. You have nearly as much power as a DM with a player wizard. I can solo 30th level encounters in third edition with a sorceror/anima mage at level 8. (If you can't do paperwork, then you'll never stand up to someone who can, under any circumstance).

I'd say try pathfinder, but pathfinder is even more unbalanced towards the arcane classes. World of Darkness is the best alternative if you aren't looking for hack and slash.

Roleplaying aspect of the game is unchanged. A bad DM is a bad DM, a good DM is a good DM.

Coming from a 2E perspective, of course arcane casters are overpowered. Most campaigns never got out of the low levels, during which arcane spellcasters are supporties.

When you were a high level in 2E, you were probably running around slaying demons and fighting gods and such. In 3E+, high level play is expected... which changes the entire playing field.

4E just tries to balance it. It does balance it.

It all doesn't matter what edition you like, because if there was a choices between playing a day long session of your fav edition vs a KR 1 day festival... how many of you would choose KR?  I think we all know the answer.

I'm now more interested in seeing how many LARPer extras were used in making the video.
