Depends on who you buy it from, but a single unit is very rarely less than four gold pieces. The best protection demands a premium price, as they say.

If I remember correctly, the going rate is 4 gold per ingut, 5 inguts going into a bar, so 20 gold per bar, and with 12 bars, that would put you at 240 gold for all of it. This is of course if the price hasn't changed recently.

20 gold per bar is the "official" price. Many demand a premium when they sell it, much as some do when selling high end gems. If one performs sufficient baronial service, it can be noted with an award of a mithril bar once per feast weekend upon arrival in the barony.

I think official Merchants' Guild policies limit the price gouging that can occur, which generally means there aren't any for sale through such means.

It is an economic fact that price controls do nothing but either subvert the market or cause further shortages of the commodity (ies) being controlled.
