Travance,
Enough of you have commented on the matter to where I feel compelled to lay my cards down.
This first bit is going to be facts only. I'll write my opinions below.
For anyone unaware of what some of us are referring to, this past feast, after the conclusion of our negotiations with Coast Haven, I shot and fatally wounded Drell Kalaheart, one of the diplomats. After the final group left, I fired a bullet into his throat, and evaded capture. Upon my return to Travance, I immediately turned myself in to Captain Oren and Lady Lois. For those wondering, I am under arrest, and though I walk freely around the Dragon's Claw, I am under constant watch, and am not permitted to leave to Proper.
Drell Kalaheart was my father. I was born Damien Kalaheart, to a loving mother, whose maiden name was Cynthia Marcain. I was their third of five children, having an older brother and sister, and a younger brother and sister. Together, the family ran and operated The Marcain Accounts, a small money lending business. This business has been on my mother's side of the family for quite a few generations, and my father married into it, hence, why it is named after her, rather than him.
Around five years ago, when I was eighteen, my father had my family executed. Cult-like followers stormed our manor in Angst, and on his command, bound us, forced us to kneel before him, and began to slit our throats, one by one, as he watched with pleasure in his eyes. It was only due to the brave efforts of my eldest brother that I alone was able to escape. Five years of living on the streets in hiding, and I ended up finding my way to Travance. Naturally, this left my father as the sole inheritor of the business.
Now, the negotiations. I was among the first of three groups that were able to visit and speak with the three diplomats. However, I slipped into the shadows as the rest of the group exited, and was able to sit in on everything from there. Both other meetings, as well as the in between. During these in-between moments, Jackdaw spoke alone with the diplomats, and they gave him blunt opinions on their feelings. After the first meeting, they complained to him that we were only wasting their time. After the second, they complimented the up-front, threatening remarks that our various leaders made to them. Things were going well. However, for one reason or another, once the third group left, the diplomats laughed in Jackdaw's face. They stated, up front and bluntly, that they had no respect for Travance, those they spoke to, or the Count. They berated him for wasting their journey for a trip that would amount to nothing. They had no intention of telling the Merchant Council anything but how badly of fools we made ourselves out to be.
Once Jackdaw left, and the diplomats chatted among themselves for a moment, I took my shot, and fled. The bullet went through Kalaheart's neck, and the force slammed him into a pillar, possibly causing further damage. I fled before I could confirm the kill, though it is unlikely anything short of divine intervention could save him from that wound.
These are the facts of the situation, to the best of my knowledge. I know not how he became a respected enough member of society to end up with the responsibilities of diplomacy for the Merchant Council.
Before you tack your responses, allow me a few minutes to now post my opinions on the matter.

I do not regret the actions I took that day. The life I took was that of a vile, uncaring beast, who likely had no intention of dealing with Travance, or anyone, in any way that would not solely benefit himself. He was scum, scrapped off the bottom of the boot of Angst and given life. I have no love for him since he forced me to watch my mother and siblings be drained of their blood, and tried to do the same to me. But his villainy alone is not what killed him that day.
Costadori myself, I know as well as anyone that strength is the only way to illicit a response from the Merchant Council. After the negotiations, despite Travance's best efforts, the diplomats were unmoved. They invaded us, and cared not for our opinions on the matter, and thus far, they had no repercussions. I took the life of the scum they brought with them, both as personal justice, and as a message. Their transgressions would not go unanswered.
Given the same situation a thousand times, knowing only what I knew then, I would always make the same decision.
Here, however, lies my failure. I cannot truthfully say I am unbiased in the matter, and my judgement was clearly twisted by my desire for vengeance. My actions were the equivalent of flipping a coin, where heads solved our problems, but tails sent us to war. I am relieved to be rid of the horrors of my past, but I made that coin toss on behalf of all of Travance, as well as all of the soldiers and citizens of both nations who may now be faced with war. This, I had no right on this world to do. Not of my own volition.
The justice I sought was not true justice, as though one bad soul was sent to the Gods, in doing so, I risked so much of those both involved and innocent.
So I've wronged you, Travance. If not on a legal level, than on a moral one. As of now, I await the deliberation of the nobility to decide my fate. But past a verdict, I still must live with what I've done. I invited your thoughts, your opinions, and your criticisms, and deserve every bereavement I will endure from this. You all deserve to say to me what you will, should you wish to. I will read and take to heart your responses, should you give them, and only respond when asked to.
I hope one day to regain the honor I have lost through this, and repair my relations with my friends, my comrades, and perhaps most importantly, my Knight.
Thank you all.

My Friend Damien,
As my people say, "when seeking vengeance, dig two graves". I am in no position to weigh in on the legality of your situation, but i applaud you on your honesty, and there is honor to be had in that.
I know the pain of your murdered family spurred your action and i cannot say I would not have acted in the same manor. We are all just mortals after all. We are all but mere puppets to our emotions.
Find solace in the life you can live now.
I know your conscience is clean. Be at peace my friend. I hope to see you at my side once more as a free man.

You killed a man you wanted dead.
A man who deserved to be killed by you and only you.
Anyone who would try to stop you only deserves the same as you gave him. Don't apologize for fulfilling your right to the revenge you were owed.

As one who regularly deals with Coast Haven leading Travance's sea-faring mercantile, I have opened more trade negotiations with a gun to someone's chest or leg than you'd want to imagine.
In my opinion, you likely saved those negotiations for showing them that you weren't just bluffing.
So, good thinking. And if he was from Angst, even better. They don't much take care for pleasantries outside of boot licking.

Damien Riverman,
Usually, I believe thinking along lines of "an eye for an eye" is risky business. Is occasionally a foolish endeavor.
However, "neck for a neck" is different.
Nice shot.

Damien,
As someone who owes a little revenge myself and can never get it I understand your actions. I have lost more then my fair share of family members, and understand the pain of what murder can do to someone. I think it is honorable that you choose now to be honest about what you have done and take responsibility for it. It sounds like you have done the world a favor of ridding us of a vile man. If there must be punishment for this, regardless of what that is, I hope that you are finally able to have found some measure of peace.

I would caution all of you from being so ready to applaud. What we await now is a sort of moral luck in the case of Mr. Marcain's actions. If they see it as an act strength and concede, then we are in great fortune. If they want war and seek justification? They now have it. A diplomat was murdered by our hand, and they can wave that banner everywhere that we might have found allies. Even if their premise for entering Kormyrian land was a lie, the world has no tangible proof. They only have proof that we are willing to murder diplomats.
Do not get me wrong; Drell Kalaheart, as I believe it in Mr. Marcain's statements, was a bastard man who deserved a swift stretch of the neck, but that does not cast aside the rules of politics or laws of the land. By taking this matter into his own hand without consulting the governing powers, Mr. Marcain entered us all, in addition to Kormyrian soldiers who do not have the luxury of resurrection, into an agreement in which death is on the line. He knew the risks and took the shot anyways.
Remember what is at stake before you applaud. If the Goureki look favorably upon us, then this turns to our favor and we should shower them in gratitude. If not, more innocent people die. We take our lives for granted. Don't take our soldiers' lives for the same.
Even if all goes well, Mr. Marcain deserves punishment. Rewarding luck teaches no lessons. While it is appropriate that he hold himself accountable in full publicity, that's all it is - appropriate. It is not commendable. It is not honorable. This is what he is supposed to do. If he did not he would be scum and villainy only.
Think critically.

And if they really wanted a war, any reason would have been good enough. Even something as small as an insult.
If they want Damien's head, I am sure our government would offer him up on a silver platter.
Get off your high horse, Piper.
What he did was justice.

Even if they planned on it, the issue now is that they can provide justification to the rest of the world who might have condemned them for it. That means fewer allies that can strongarm them into avoiding war.
It's only justice in a vacuum, and it wasn't served with any amount of consideration for the rest of the us. It won't be justice to those who get killed for this "insult."
We can be happy that Mr. Marcain found some measure of peace in getting his vengeance, but recognize the gravity of what it means for the rest of the world. We can't afford to think so small.

In not speaking in hyperbole when I say I've opened negotiations with a pistol before.
Merchant leaders and other high stations in Angst and Faust are incredibly cutthroat. Force and intimidation are almost always necessary.
This isn't to excuse the action. It wasn't planned or approved and thus still a crime in our laws that is being deliberated by the Great Council. However, it likely also secured our deal because now they will be taking us seriously.

My Lord,
I am no stranger of Angstian politicking. Were it that the entirety of the emissaries from Angst, I might have agreed with you. It is regrettable that only Drell was Angst and he no longer bears a throat with which to speak. The others were from Septufas, which might have warranted a lighter touch. Even if it were the case that three should be from Angst, the assassination is muddied as a political maneuver considering nothing was done in its wake. Had there been some plan, we might have capitalized on it in some way, but Mr. Marcain did not even say anything to them. No further demands were made. No further displays. If a show of force was the idea, then an open duel would have sufficed. At least then we could have maintained a measure of propriety and continued the discussion afterward.
My Lord, I do wish it greatly that this outcome should turn to our favor, and that Her Majesty, Queen Luiza, as well as the Great Merchant Council of the Noble League of Coast Haven should find the move impressive or intimidating. If they should not, well, I shudder at the thought. I understand that a certain degree of grit is necessary when in play with Costadori politics, but I do not believe Mr. Marcain's actions are deserving commendation, Admiral Demirosz. If things go well, it is luck and luck alone, not some calculated maneuver.
My apologies in advance if my debate is in some way considered a disrespect to you or your station.

Look. We can sit and go back and forth on these papers all day. In the end, what we think doesn't really matter. The high council will decide Damien's fate. And he doesn't seem to be hiding or making any excuses for what he did, so I'll give him that. But us going back and forth on whether or not what he did was right or wrong isn't really gonna do anything other than just cause more arguments because we all have our own viewpoints on the matter.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go have a drink because I can't believe I just wrote those words and I need to go contemplate who the hell I've become.

"Someone shot a guy. But we hate that guy, so we're okay with the shooting, things'll probably go well, but also he should be in trouble for shooting that guy. Here is an advertisement for a popular local drinking establishment.'
I thought I might have to explain Coast Haven diplomacy, but Travance seems to have the jist of it down.

Cabins of the Month
Dark Monastery, Dregamire Statehouse
Again, we couldn’t just choose one! The state house that is normally Drega’mire, where Mars, Diane, and crew stayed was done very well. They had several regulars and some new players staying in one large room and did an admirable job covering coolers, hiding gym bags and setting up a few prop filled tables and hangings. This is why the sprit of RP is important. Just putting a little more effort into cabin decoration enhances the immersion for the whole game. Nice job everyone! The Dark Monastery was also done very well. Creepy and dark, vastly different from the Monastery we are all used to. The random body parts and such made it so you never forgot what god was worshipped there! Most of the work was done by Rob & Emily G. and we wanted to let them know they did a great job! A special thank you to Kate, Kristen & Jason A. for setting up the mage’s guild & the armory also.Dark Monastery, Dregamire Statehouse
